May Month POTD Challenge – The Deets

I think it would be helpful if I posted some details for this challenge.  As previously posted, May is Speech and Hearing Month.  Since I am a Speech Pathologist this is a month that is near and dear to my heart.  Being an avid instagram & twitter user I thought it would be fun to do a Speech and Hearing May Month photo of the day…and so I created THIS

Participate as much as you like…if you miss any days feel free to “catch up” with us and post pics from earlier in the month.

As usual I want to have prizes and I want everyone to have fun.  Please mark all entries with the #MMpotd hashtag or @ndnspeechmom so I will know you are participating and can give you credit for that entry.

So far my ideas for winners are

  • Most entries (if multiple people post 31 pics I will choose one of them randomly)
  • Random Lucky Winners – every pic posted is 1 chance to win, the more pics you post the most chances you have.  There will be several *random* winners as all the prizes haven’t been determined yet.

So far for prizes I have CASLPA SWAG (leather portfolios, notebooks & other assorted office gear), an APP FROM SUPER DUPER called Understanding Inferences and the world famous SUPER DUPER BAG (donated thanks to the lovely @AshleyLesleySD ), a year subscription to LESSON PIX donated by @LessonPix and then some other awesome and amazing prizes that I haven’t decided on yet.  I am so thankful for these wonderful and generous people for donating prizes for the challenge.  I vouch for them as both brilliant and potential twitter BFFs.

In order to make sure you get your pictures entered please remember to either @ reply me (@ndnspeechmom) or to use the #MMpotd on your post.  Pictures can be entered either on twitter or instagram.  Please have fun with this and post away!!

If you decide not to post please follow the #MMpotd hashtag, I’m already getting a lot of ideas and I’m really enjoying all the pictures.  Be creative, interpret the topics in your own way.

So about this game

I feel a little bad for any non SLP readers (do I have nonSLP readers?) for all the SLPeepGame posts on twitter. Also, I didn’t realize until the game was complete exactly how hard the game was…….so in the interest of “upping the ante” I have sweetened the pot.  The lucky winner will receive 1) a year’s subscription to Lesson Pix 2) an app from Verbally App and 3) these ndnspeechmom approved earlobe decorations!

Please note: these are indeed sweet but I have no idea how they taste

I know right? Awesome. Please feel free to PLAY THE GAME and don’t worry, comments are screened so nobody can see your answers. And to anyone who does not like/wear earrings…I’m fairly sure you could find these a home.

Note: the techie prizes were both donated independently, and although I have not tried either product I am sure they  are amazing. Questions about the app and the subscription are best asked of the very generous, extremely attractive and utterly brilliant @VerballyApp and @LessonPix.  I’m so pleased that they not only donated prizes to the game but submitted pictures for it as well.

Meet the SLPeeps – Guess and win! EDITED WITH ANSWERS

Thank you to everyone that submitted their picture and facts for the game. I have had an awesome time looking at everyone’s pictures and learning a little more about all of you. Now for the explanation. The childhood pic will be posted with the five facts; the object of the game is to match the childhood pic with the corresponding SLPeep.

THE PRIZES – Yes, I said prizes, as in plural. I am happy to say that I have had 2 fabulous prizes donated for the winner of the game. The first is an app from @VerballyApp and the second is a gift certificate to @LessonPix !! I’d like to thank them for their generous donations and I encourage everyone to explore their products. Personally I can’t wait to get an iPad so I can try all the iPad only apps. In addition there is also a prize of a pair of beaded earrings.

The Winner will be the person who identifies the most correct SLPeeps by Friday evening (winner announced Saturday Feb 11.) Good luck everyone!

Please match the following SLPeeps (and honorary SLPeeps) with the childhood photos below. I have provided a link to each twitter page so you can get hints from their avatar (if you need help) and also so you can follow any that you are not currently following. I am hoping that this game will be fun…it will definitely be challenging since we have 26 participants!! Let’s MEET THE SLPEEPS!!!! (I totally did a ring announcer voice when I typed that.)

Meet the SLPeeps!

As I hope most of you know, I am a Speech Pathologist and an avid twitter user.  On twitter there is an active group called the SLPeeps. There is also another group calledthe  SLPs2B. (I hope I got the acronym correct.)  Not so long ago when there were not many of us on “the twittah” it was easier to keep track of everyone; from where they were located, to personal interests, areas of professional expertise, etc. etc.  Now that we have had a recent influx of SLPeeps I find myself losing track of everyone.

Previously we played a SLPgame where we guessed each others accents while reading the rainbow passage.  It was fun (well I thought it was fun) and several participated.  I have an idea for a new game which will allow us to learn more about each other, both the original and the new members.

If all interested SLPeeps (and SLP2B) would please email a childhood (baby through high school) picture of themselves along with 5 fun facts to they can be part of the game.  The facts can be anything from fav food, origin, area of professional interest, professional accomplishments, and fun random personal factoids.

The idea of the game is to guess which twitter handle goes with which pic/fun facts.

I will be posting the game on friday for guesses and I will try think of a prize.  Please play!! You have until friday morning to email me your entry, and those entered can still guess.

1)raised on a reservation in Canada 2) fav show is Criminal Minds 3) works with First Nation children 4) livetweeted through her last labour and delivery 5) loves bacon

8th Fire in 2012

Tan’si! Hi….this feels awkward only because I haven’t posted in so long.  I obviously missed the obligatory “Merry Christmas” and “Happy New Year” posts but I hope you all had a great holiday.  Now that we are well into the new year our lives are all returning to normal.  Thank goodness. 2012.  I thought for sure I would have a jetpack by now.

I was having coffee with my dad the other day and he was looking through the pictures on my laptop of my children over the holidays.  He told me how lucky they are to have so many pictures from their childhood.  He said he only has a few baby pictures of himself and I mentioned that I had a couple that I found online.  He stared at me blankly and I reminded him that I had told him about it over a year ago.  He continued to stare at me so I directed him to this website and showed him this picture. The caption of the picture (from a newspaper at the time) was

“Santa Visits Indian Kiddies at North Battleford.”

Can you guess which one is my dad?

He was completely stunned.  He stared at the picture for the longest time and named all the other boys without reading the caption below it.  He laughed and told me, “We even rounddanced for him. That was a nice day.”  My dad was sick a lot as a child, and spent quite a bit of time in the hospital.  He told me that was why he was only in residential school for a year, he was taken out and put in the hospital .  Maybe being sick saved him from years and years in residential school like my mother had to attend.

I thought of this picture not only because it pertained to Christmas but because I watched 8th Fire – Indigenous in the City on CBC last night, hosted by Wab Kinew.  It is a powerful 4 part documentary that I hope has inspired conversations today.  View it here if you missed it last night.  Please watch it and share the link.  Talk about it as well.  I loved it.  I’m anxious to see the next part and I can’t wait until my children are old enough to discuss it with me.  I myself am not an urban Indian.  (Yes, I just said Indian instead of native, but that is my right.  I was Indian as a child and in my own head I still use the term.  This however doesn’t mean I appreciate others using it in a derogatory manner.)  I grew up on Thunderchild First Nation and only left for university.  Now I find myself living in a small town 10 minutes from my rez, it is not a city but this program resonated with me.  Living in town is so different.  I have neighbors, I can hear vehicles that are not coming to visit…it isn’t quiet and still like I am used to.
I’m fortunate in that I know what it is like to grow up with my traditions, I was always proud but I wanted more.  I hungered for something I didn’t quite understand.  I always wanted to be “better,” to be “more,” to be “successful.”  I don’t even know where those desires came from, or where or if I even heard them expressed aloud by an adult.  As a child I loved to write, sing in talent shows, dance pow wow and enjoyed performing in plays…but I always knew I was going to university, because I had to.  My parents pushed me towards education, telling me it was my future and that it was the ONLY path I could consider for my future.
As you know I am now a Speech Pathologist.  Currently I am the only native SLP in my home province of Saskatchewan.  I’ve had people ask me why I choose to live here, why I don’t take my degree and go to the city.  Clearly these people do not understand me.  I might only be 10 minutes from my rez, but it feels farther.  I don’t know that I could move farther because my heart is there.  I love to travel and have not done it much lately but I want to be able to see the world, go to the city and then come home.  It grounds me.  It heals me.  It is me.
(btw the boy with the biggest smile closest to Santa is my dad Gordon Angus)
